My students are all English Language Learners living in Queens, New York. These students and their wonderful families represent Queens, the heart of New York City, speaking languages ranging from Arabic, Bangladesh, Spanish, Urdu and German. My first, fourth, and fifth grade students are hard workers. We were all taken off guard with the epidemic and I know my students and their families would appreciate any supplies to continue their studies at home.
My Project
One Friday in March, we left our NYC public school for the weekend, not realizing it was the last day we would be all together for the school year. No one was prepared for this pandemic, the upheaval it would have in our family lives. No one could predict this new wave of distance learning that we would be challenged to overcome.
Yet, my resilient students from Queens are persevering during this uncertain time.
They are working. Their families are trying their best. As teachers, we are trying to create lessons and be supportive of our community of learners. These basic art supplies will be used by students so they can continue to create at home. It will be a care package to brighten their day, so they know how much their teacher and their community supports them.
