Here at our school, while we use the academic curriculum from Anchorage School District, our main focus is advancing the social-emotional development of students within an intensive and supportive learning environment.
We do not receive the same funding as most neighborhood schools, therefore the teachers here must get creative to provide the best learning environment for our students.
Each of our students have acute behavioral needs and a large percentage come from low-income households. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch from the district.
My Project
The materials here will be used for our new Home Economics/Food Science class! Most of what we'll be learning together is all new for these kids- some have never used an oven, made a meal, or even cooked pasta.
Our semester-long class has been broken up into food and home management units, in which our students will learn the basics of food prep, cooking and basic life skills.
These students will be able to take the skills they learn in class out into their own worlds and hopefully make their lives easier. All of our lessons directly relate to things they need to know for life outside of school.
