Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and immerse themselves daily in the cultures of their peers through learning two languages (English and Spanish). Our students strive toward academic excellence in both languages in all academic subjects, which makes them very unique. Each child brings something special to the classroom through their experiences and areas of expertise. They make our school an exceptional place to be through their determination to be successful academically while embracing the many cultures that come together within our walls.
My Project
Students spend much of their time in school which practically makes it a home away from home. I want my students to feel that the space where they are learning is one of comfort.
My students requested items that they wanted in our classroom to make it a space that they felt was comfortable, calm, and inviting to help their learning.
Curtains for our classroom would help provide additional external light filtering when we use our projector or want to create a calmer classroom setting. Most of our classroom blinds are broken, don't go all the way down, or can't be moved due to old age. We would need rods and extra supports to ensure that we can properly hang our curtains. Students requested new and inspiring wall decor which would provide them a boost on a challenging day in class and a new calendar since ours is going on 8 years old. Currently, our classroom is lit by large and intense florescent lights which the kids have mentioned as being overwhelming. They feel that having lamp light in class will be softer on the eyes and promote a calming classroom atmosphere that is often lost when the overhead lights are on.
Providing a classroom space that feels welcoming and like a home away from home will allow students to focus more on their work with clear minds rather than having their thoughts wander to the intense overhead light or not being able to see the projector due to the non-functional blinds. Lastly, students feel a great sense of community and comfort in a classroom where they had input on its improvements and changes.
