My 5th graders are an incredible group of kiddos who love to read!
Our school is an urban oasis, and my kiddos come from far and wide to attend it.
Many of the kids start their day at the Before Care program provided by the school, arriving as early as 7:00 a.m., and stay after school at the After Care program, often not leaving until as late as 6:00 p.m.
Because of these long hours, our school is a home away from home for many of my students. Therefore, it is important for them to be comfortable while they are there. When students have a warm, inviting space, they are comfortable, which leads to them putting forth their best effort. My kiddos LOVE to have a comfy place to read. At just about any time of day, you can find my students on bean bags, pillows, yoga balls, or the sofa reading or working in groups. Reading is a HUGE part of our day because in 5th grade students are reading to learn, which means they spend a large amount of their day getting information through reading.
My Project
My project, Home Away From Home, is about giving these kids a comfortable place to sit and read every day. A soft, colorful rug is the centerpiece of any classroom! It is also important that it's large enough for the entire class to sit on for class meetings, circle time, etc... This beautiful rug will be used on a daily basis by my 5th grade literacy classes so they have a comfortable place to sit and listen while I read aloud to them.
The bright blue chairs will be used for my kiddos to have a comfy place to sit and get lost in a good book, which is important in ANY reading class!
