Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have taught about the Holocaust for over 10 years. Previously, I was able to use resources provided to us with kits, audio books, pictures, and real life accounts of survivors. I do all this in a thematic unit from the novel we are reading, "Number the Stars". However, we no longer have these resources.

I teach 96 students in 6th grade.

Ten of which are Special Needs, and 6 which are bilingual. In addition, I have 5 of 504 students who require constant monitoring. Every year, I feel that students need to be aware of our history, and what better way to do it than to take them on a voyage to through the past in "Number the Stars". Most of my students are visual and auditory learners and I am out of resources to provide them with a most wonderful gift, to honor those lives that were shattered in the Holocaust. I feel that students need to Learn about the past, to understand the Present and to STOP something so horrific to happen again in the Future. I have began my Thematic Unit and I wish you could see the astonishment and disbelief on my students face. It is very rewarding to see students moved by the power of a stranger's occurrence. In addition, every year students complete a final project that shows their understanding as well their honoring of lives and childhoods lost.

My Project

The resources I am requesting are audio books as well as additional reading supplies that represent evidence that this atrocity did occur. I am confident that my students will learn about prejudice and the power of words. In addition, this will help them apply skills to their life that enables to feel compassion for others even though they do not know them. Most of my students need to listen to books in order to understand the content in retrospect to their individual needs. There is no better result than to see visual representation of a time so many are willing to banish and say it never happen.

I feel that this is crucial to my students now more than ever due to all the things happening in the world.

We are losing to many of our youth to gangs and violence. We need to show them words and that bullying can have a tremendous impact on someones life. It is imperative for students to understand that history has a way to repeat itself.
