My students need nonfiction and memoir books about the Holocaust for a research unit. They need contrasting views: one from Anne Frank and from a child who survived.
Remember reading your first memoir and the connection you felt with that person from another time? The feeling of being transported into time to experience a part of history? My students are hungry for that experience and I believe Anne Frank can bring it to them.
We are a rural school that is the center of the community.
Many of the children have families who have been in the community for several generations. My students are hungry for greater insight into the world around them. Many of my students have a long family history of military service- I believe this unit over WWII memoirs will connect their family patriotism with an important part of World History to give them that deeper insight that they are so hungry for.
My Project
My students will use these two memoirs to contrast two girls experiences of the Holocaust- one from Anne Frank and the other from a survivor. From these memoirs they will get unique perspectives of WWII and feel themselves transported into these girls lives. They will then do a research project over the Holocaust that ties in with these contrasting memoirs. Hopefully if the timing works out we will be able to do this when their history class is covering WWII for an in-depth learning experience. I've also requested a few supplementary materials to aide us in these projects.
Our students need more nonfiction texts to read, especially memoirs. What better choice then memoirs that examine the most horrific war to provide us greater insight into this part of history and help ensure we don't forget. My students have expressed a great deal of interest in reading The Diary of Anne Frank- I'm sure both of these class sets of books will captivate them. ATPE member.

These memoirs will provide contrasting perspectives that will provide further insight into such an important part of world history.
