I teach 8th grade Language Arts Bridge students which is Bridge to AP classes, preparing them for high school Advanced Placement courses. They are excited to learn and willing to put in the effort everyday.
When we started the Holocaust unit, each of my students made an original quote regarding challenges.
"You aren't weak if you can't immediately overcome a challenge. It proves you are strong for not giving up even though it may have seemed impossible at first." -8th grade student.
We are a school in Tallahassee, Florida that feeds into a high school with challenging and exceptional advanced placement classes. My class, 8th grade Bridge to AP, is meant to help prepare students for this challenge.
My Project
Every year I will be teaching a unit covering the Holocaust. Students will be reading Holocaust books in groups of 5 so the class is exposed to multiple accounts of the event this way. Students are extremely interested in this topic, disturbing fascinated I like to call it, and they are not on willing, but eager to go in depth and read non-fiction and fictional accounts of the event. My students have read the few Holocaust books I have in my classroom and have been itching for more!
Just giving facts about the Holocaust is proving difficult for the students to relate to and actually connect with victims and survivors; by them reading actual accounts of the Holocaust, students have a much better chance of making that connection and putting a face to at least some of the 12 million killed.
