This year, our school became part of the Massachusetts "Green Team" through the work of our principal. In my classroom, we did several green projects, including organizing a sale or rain barrels, setting up a compost bin, and conducting weekly trash walks in the town park. Our school was recognized for these efforts and others, including a school-wide recycling program. These projects fit in well with the fourth grade science frameworks, which stress an understanding of environmental science with an emphasis on how students can help the environment. While environmental science is one major aspect of fourth grade science, another is life science. Students were introduced to the 5 kingdoms of living organisms we set up worm habitats. All of these projects were supplemented with nonfiction reading, which is an essential skill that is tested on the English Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test. I am asking for a wide variety of materials that will allow us to continue learning about life and environmental science in continuing years. Most of the available funds in our school district are used for English and math, and this project would allow us to create a unique and exciting learning environment to develop a love of science in students at an early age. The first material I am asking for is a compost bin. The current bin was donated, and has not held up well. We have established the compost bin as a school-wide project, and we have educated the younger students in the school about what waste items from their lunch tray can be deposited into the compost bin. Purchasing this bin will allow us to continue with this program. The second set of materials I am asking for include worm farms. This year, we made our own out of cardboard. However, I would like to create worm farms that can be set up and used by students throughout the year, and into future years. The third set of materials that I am requesting relate to the upkeep of hermit crabs in the classroom. For much of the year, students have been responsible for the well-being of one hermit crab in our classroom. We have used the hermit crab as a way to learn the basic needs that all animals share for survival. Additionally, students bring home the hermit crab for one weekend, which is also used as a way to build their independence and responsibility. Finally, I am asking for a classroom set of Time for Kids. I have used Time for Kids successfully in other districts. Unfortunately, we do not have the funds to purchase it in this school at this time. Purchasing this magazine will allow students to read nonfiction articles which are directly related to science and social studies topics covered in the fourth grade curriculum. I appreciate your time in evaluating this project. Your funds would allow us to continue to build on the success of our "green team" program this year, and to teach students across several years the importance of learning environmental and life science.
