In our low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. These adverse experiences may prevent them from getting ahead early in life. We do what we can, and many of my students receive a care package at the beginning of the year with clothes, shoes, toiletries, and a book from Operation School Bell.
My students want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly help their experience during the school day.
Now that we have started distance learning for the 2020-2021 academic school year, it has been my focus to provide students valuable instruction and experiences through these difficult times. We send home a monthly materials bag and give them plenty of opportunities to be counted present. Whether communicated directly with the teacher, turning in assignments or joining us live any point through our five hours of synchronizing daily learning period.
There is nothing more important than being with family. During this holiday, it will be like no other for most of my students. Whether my students are with family or in a group home, I want my students to be included! My students will each receive a strategy game to play with whoever they are with. We give out a monthly distribution of classroom supplies. I hope that this provides a fun, safe, and engaging activity over the winter break while we are not meeting in person or virtually.
The popular, fun games are to stimulate and engage conversation and thinking with other blood family members, friends, or choice family.
Lastly, it's always nice to receive a gift, just because you're special to someone else.
