I teach 53 students in grades Pre K through fifth in the Migrant Education Program. All of my families work in agriculturally-related work, and they move frequently to find employment. My students receive in-school or at-home instruction in literacy and math skills. Because most of my students speak one of seven other languages, we also spend time working on English language skills. All of my students come from low-income households and do not have books to read at home. They have the drive and desire to be good readers, but they need materials for home use. The goal of this project is to provide them the books necessary to continue reading when they are on vacation from school.
My Project
Backpacks funded through this project will be filled with lots of books, school supplies, activity books, hats and gloves, blankets, and fruit and snacks. These will go home with my students over the school holiday to ensure that they are warm, fed and most importantly, reading at home. I will select half a dozen fiction and nonfiction levelized readers for each student to keep them learning and in the habit of reading daily. All of my students come from low-income households, and the materials supplied in the backpacks will fill the void from missing school by providing food, books and supplies for home use. A blanket, hat and gloves will keep them warm during our cold Northwest Arkansas winters.
