Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. Our school often has the greatest ethnic diversity of all the schools in the state. We also have the largest high school in the state. The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. The school, especially the math department is very technology poor. These students do not have readily accessible technology that allows them to truly engage in the content as they could.

Like all kids, they enjoy learning most when they are actively engaged.

It is not uncommon to have a student absent due to either a suspension or from the lack of interest in being in school. This is evidence that they are disengaged. These students need a better reason to be in the classroom than grades alone. They need to become a part of the system. They need to feel needed.

My Project

My students are from very diverse backgrounds and have minimal resources. Many of my students do not speak English proficiently and do understand the calculator for real-life usage. Most of my students are in need of resource services and would benefit from the TI-84 calculator. They would see the process of calculating and graphing connecting to a final product.

My students need graphing calculators.

Without them, the students will be at an extreme disadvantage when tasked with graphing systems, calculating proportions, and solving equations. Students' future ability to succeed depends on donations and caring community members.

Donations to this project will assist students in becoming college and career ready. It will provide an opportunity for students to practice and use a vital mathematical tool so that they are prepared for the state exams, college, and beyond.

My students are getting caught up in their math fact fluency. When they are struggling to multiply and divide fluently they are losing out on what they are really doing. An example of this would be when I want to know my students can set up unit rates, not whether they can multiply or divide. Much like other subjects if a student is stumbling over all the skills, they are not hearing the message. They are going to use calculators to compute math facts when they are learning other concepts. We use graphing as an integral part of interpreting data and trends. When we stop struggling to compute, we start learning.

Your generous donations are going to allow my students to grasp concepts that are based in math facts but not graded on them. This will allow students who are not as comfortable with their math facts to realize that they are not "bad" at all math, but are merely stumbling over the skill.
