Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a high needs area. I have seventeen students this year and many of them are English Language Learners. Most of them have had limited exposure to books and literacy materials.

My first grade students love to read and explore the big books that we often use. Unfortunately, we do not have a big book stand so my students either have to sit on the floor to use the books or have other students hold the books while they are reading. During shared reading time, I have to have two student helpers hold the big books so that I can use them for instruction. This means that these students miss out on the most of the lesson.

My first graders would love a big books stand with some storage to hold the big books during shared reading time and during center time when they are reading them in small groups. We are also in need of the storage this stand will provide; as of right now we have to store our books on the floor which means they are always in the way.

Your help will make it easier for my students to read the big books that provide phonics and sight word instruction. This stand will also encourage my students to use the big book center during reading time which will increase their reading fluency.
