My Students

As the music teacher for two entire schools, I teach every kindergarten through fourth grade student within these two giant buildings. I see more than 600 kids each week. These schools are in a large, diverse, suburban area and many students receive free and reduced-price lunch. Each class comes to music for one 30 minute session per week.

We enjoy every minute we spend in our weekly class, making music, learning, and having fun!

Our class utilizes several different music education structures, but focuses mainly on theories by John Feierabend and Carl Orff.

My Project

Daily my students play a xylophone. From the start in kindergarten all the through 4th grade my students experiment, explore, improvise, and create on xylophones. The creativity and problem solving that comes forth on these xylophones is miraculous to watch. My students live for the xylophones and are continually inspired through them. We explore sounds high and low in kindergarten with these tools. First grade through second accompanies all of our songs with them. Third grade cannot only play beautiful melodies, but learn notation, rhythm, and technique. Fourth grade does all of this and more. They astound me with their own musical creations on these same xylophones.
