My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade with a variety of learning needs who attend a public school in an urban area in Pennsylvania. I teach at a Title I school where many of my students participate in the free school lunch program and Backpack Initiative food on the weekends.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
They want to be in school because they want to learn everything they can to be successful in the future.
My Project
Many of my students with special needs benefit from having math problems read aloud so they can focus on the math and not get bogged down with decoding every word. While I try to get to every student, there is only one of me to go around so my students must patiently wait for their individual problem to be read. To help give my students independence through on demand audio support and maximize their time, I have begun to record myself reading aloud math tests and word problems on my tablet. Currently to make these recordings, my tablet teeters on a stool recording the test on the floor below. This makeshift stand is not ideal for myself as an adult, let alone putting it into the hands of my students for their projects.
With a hands-free secure tablet stand, my students can begin to take recordings of their own work.
They can work on math communication skills allowing their hands to be free to show skills such as demonstrating how to use a compass or measure accurately with a ruler. My students can record themselves as they write and talk through mathematical problems, giving me insight into their thinking. The sturdy base of this tablet stand can provide a great way to create stop motion videos with my students. After all, one of the key components to creating a great stop motion movie is to keep the camera steady at all times.
With my students, I utilize digital portfolios and would like to provide my students with a way to easily capture their own learning allowing them to document their individual progress toward their IEP goals. This tablet stand will provide my students and I with the opportunity to share work, ideas and anything else that inspires.
