Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Our academy students are the very best mixture of students coming from different towns and with varied experiences. It is this that makes for the perfect mix of cultures and traditions.
When they visit my classroom, I make it a place where we can learn to value cultures through the exploration of Spanish-speaking countries, the language, food, and cultures.
Just the other day, I had a discussion with one class about the uniqueness of our school. In that particular class, there is one Caucasian student. The rest, including myself, are minority students. The beauty of it was that they did not recognize this until I pointed it out; it lead to a beautiful discussion about Hispanic culture.
My Project
I teach Spanish to students in PreK-5th grade, inspiring students to learn about the language and cultures through the use of books. The books selected will be used to introduce new topics, review information, or be used for free reading for older students.
Being a museum-themed magnet school, the use of books to inspire artifact building for our exhibition nights is something that I hope to incorporate as a collaboration with the art instructor at the school.
This project will not only help better my practice, but it will also help my students develop and/or enhance skills utilized in other disciplines. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read.
