My students need alternative seating in order to maximize their learning experience. Four hokki stools will allow my students with attention problems to flourish.
Do you remember what it was like when you were a student in elementary school? Uncomfortable chairs? Rows of desks? Assigned seats? Sound familiar? Teaching in the 21st century is evolving so our classroom design should as well.
My students are struggling readers that range from Kindergarten through fifth grade.
Many of my students struggle in reading due to attention and home life issues. Several of my students are English Language Learners or are currently in the RTI process receiving interventions in the effort to get them on grade level. They have a difficult time sitting still in hard chairs and need opportunities to get their "wiggles" out. Students need an alternative. I've started the process of providing alternative seating by lowering a table so students can sit on the floor and by trading desks for tables. But I want to take it a step further. I believe Hokki Stools are the perfect addition to my classroom to keep my students actively learning.
My Project
Time is always against teachers and as a reading specialist my time with students is limited. Every minute counts in my room. My hope is that by giving students an opportunity to use a Hokki Stool their time on task will increase. The Hokki Stool’s ergonomic design and convex base allows movement in all directions while the soft seat padding prevents slipping during dynamic movement. Students will be given more opportunities for movement, which will increase blood flow and send oxygen to the brain. This will increase attention and concentration levels for students so they can have an active learning experience. I believe Hokki Stools will create an environment where students’ attention barriers are removed so more time can be devoted to becoming a successful reader and student. Creating life-long readers is my ultimate goal but I want to create them in environments were students are comfortable and engaged. Hokki Stools seem to be a viable option to make this happen!
I believe the use of Hokki Stools will create a student-centered classroom that gives students options when it comes to seating.
When students are given choice, they have a greater chance for success and strengthen their self-efficacy. As teachers of 21st century learners, it is our job to prepare our students for the real world. I believe using Hokki Stools is a big step towards creating a workspace for the 21st century student!
