My students need a trip to the Wisconsin Historical Society to receive one-on-one research help from Historical Society librarians and archivists in advance of the National History Day Regional competition in February.
I am lucky to be able to teach U.S. History to six classes of 8th graders. Our school is in a rural area and we have seen the number of students in poverty rise over the past eight years and that has encouraged teachers to become more creative as we try to engage students in learning and teach them applicable real world skills.
Our school recently went one-to-one, so students have access to technology at school and at home which allows us to do so much more in the area of research.
But, one area where we fall behind is in funding for field trips and external learning opportunities.
Our school is a 6-8 school and we have over 100 dedicated staff members who work hard to engage students at all levels in their learning.
My Project
National History Day is a year long academic enrichment program that helps students learn about historical issues, ideas, people, and events. Students select topics connected to an annual theme and complete their own in-depth research on the topic. All 8th grade students complete a project in their U.S. History class, and then some students, who are recommended by their social studies teacher, have the chance to compete at the school and regional level.
These real-world opportunities help them grow academically, learn to take care with their creations, and take pride in their work product.
Your donations would be used to fund a field trip to the Wisconsin Historical Society Library and Archives for students to search for unique primary sources. Students would be assigned to a librarian who would help them find appropriate and interesting resources related to their topic. The excursion would last for four hours and include lunch. The grant could pay for the bus to Madison and t-shirts for the students.
