My students need weighted balls, a pitching machine, a portable rechargeable generator, and a portable pitching screen to work on our batting in our schoolyard for our softball season.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
Softball season just started and we need more hits! Unfortunately, we're running into a few bumps in the road. So here it is... Problem 1: we're having a real hard time securing the gym long enough to set up our net and practice our batting. In the mornings we have about 45min to practice before we start packing up for class. To set up our net in the gym it takes at least 25 minutes of our time to build, take down, and store away. It just doesn't make sense to do that. Now with a lightweight pitching machine and a light portable pitching screen, we can carry them around to any available open space (cough cough, our concrete schoolyard). It would only take 5 min to carry them out to the yard. Problem 2: we need to power the machine. This is why we need that rechargeable electric generator. With the generator fully charged we will get 2hrs of life from our pitching machine, that's 2 mornings worth of batting practice!
Last season we went 8-3 and came short in our second playoff game; that's not the plan for this year!
The softball team will benefit greatly from these items. Yeah, we work off the tee and soft toss, but nothing is better than a live ball practice in the AM. We want to make sure that our softball team is ready for any pitcher we face and won't allow anyone to put our bats to sleep. We're also asking for a few weighted training softballs to help strengthen our arms.
