The joy and excitement on my student's faces when given a chance to create music of their own does not change with age! Some excel at creating stories to accompany a song, others improvise patterns on instruments, while still others can compose new words to a verse or choreograph a dance. I want my students to learn to express themselves and be creative! Those are the things they will remember and the musical skills that they will carry and apply to other areas of their life.
The students I teach are the lowest of the low in a very large district.
Unfortunately there are many barriers to learning that our students struggle to fight through: broken families, poverty, ESL (English is a second language for 95% of them), and the lack of a positive home support system. In addition, many live a transitory lifestyle, moving frequently. Despite these struggles, they still come to school with bright personalities and eager smiles.
My students love the opportunity to expand their music learning beyond their voices and create music on instruments. While we have been able to add to our inventory of rhythmic instruments such as tubanos and hand drums, our collection of melodic instruments is sparse. Glockenspiels are an affordable and attainable way for us to explore melody, chords, and intervals.
Having different instruments available for students to use and explore allows for a well-rounded classroom.
The instruments all possess unique timbres, which make all parts clear and well defined. Their use helps children become sensitive listeners and considerate participants as they play together in an ensemble. Barred instruments such as glockenspiels also challenge and develop student's gross and fine motor skills along with hand-eye coordination.
