The students in my 7th grade Core class are curious and inquisitive. They question the world around them, as well as their place in it, and often turn to reading to try and figure out who and what they are going to be as they grow. They lose themselves in their reading and are often surprised by what they find in return.
As their teacher, I am proud of their creative thinking and want to provide the tools that they need to develop into life-long learners.
My students thrive on collaboration and are always searching for different perspectives on complex issues. They love to share their ideas with their classmates. Next, they will share their ideas with the world.
My Project
In my classroom, students are allowed to self-select the books they want to read so they can read something that appeals to them. As students begin to study historical fiction they will be in historical fiction book clubs, or groups with other students who are interested in the same book as them. In these book clubs, my students will be engrossed in their study of historical fiction by analyzing characters, setting, themes, and the historical context of the text.
To ensure that each student is able to read a book that interests them, I need access to multiple sets of engaging historical fiction texts to form book clubs.
When students are able to read books that they are interested in, like Echo, or The Great Trouble, they are more invested in their reading and active analysis of the text. With books like these in my library, my students will be able to pick books that are best suited for them and truly enjoy their immersion with historical fiction.
