Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All my students are 6th graders (ages 10-11), and I teach Spanish in a 50:50 model. Students learn math, science, Spanish language arts and ancient history in Spanish. The majority of my students are learning Spanish as their second language. I want to motivate students to enjoy learning about the past through STEM lessons.
My students are passionate about learning and are always eager in learning through different techniques.
I want to students to be able to practice teamwork skills, apply their mathematical and critical thinking to solve STEAM challenges.
My Project
As we study about ancient history in 6th grade, I remind students that we learn about the past to understand the present and improve our future.
I want student to be passionate about their past and engage them through STEM challenges.
In an effort to spark students creativity and ingenuity, I want to provide all my students sufficient supplies to go through the STEM process. I want to be able to provide them with craft sticks, tooth picks, plastic cups, beads, pipe cleaners, glue, clay, rubber bands and plastic wheels. Additionally, I want to give them plastic straws to allow them to brainstorm ideas before starting their historical model.
Students will use the materials to create historical advancements of societies such as a Ziggurat when we study about Mesopotamia, a pyramid when we study about Egypt, a chariot and/or catapult when we study about Greece and an aqueduct and/or Roman roads when we study about Rome.
I want to allow my students to be creative and innovative with their own ideas and designs while learning about the past and practicing engineering and mathematical skills.
