Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What comes to mind when you think of cowboys and Native Americans?
For my students at Martin Luther King Jr. High School on Manhattan's Upper West Side, this simple question elicited blank stares and shrugged shoulders.
My high school, Martin Luther King Jr. High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice, was formed in 2002. With 87 percent of the students qualifying for free lunch and many students below level in reading and mathematics, getting students to embrace learning and come to school has been a challenge.
I am currently teaching three classes of U.S. History, which culminates with students taking the New York State U.S. history Regents examination in June. Most of the students in my classes are not native English speakers, having emigrated to the U.S. from countries such as Colombia and the Ivory Coast in Africa. These students do not understand many of the concepts covered in the class due to their lack of cultural reference. The students are also not able to get a mental image of people, places, and things discussed.
In order to help these students grasp these elements, I am requesting a series of eleven videos, called "Documents of Destiny: Just the Facts," that will enable the students to gain a visual understanding of our history. My school currently does not have a video library or any other visual resources to help these students. Through viewing the videos on topics such as slavery, civil rights and the 1920s, students will be able to better understand the class material.
Your kind donation will be greatly appreciated.
