History That Won't Put You to Sleep

My students need 29 copies of "You Wouldn't Want to be an American Colonist".

I offered to teach social studies this year because I hoped to transform the class into one that would come alive! Many of our students live in situations that limit their growth and generally, most students are not familiar with life outside our town.

Our students only have access to outdated history books that neither interest nor inspire our students. I try very hard to create a project based curriculum that includes simulations, plays, posters, interviews, and other unique ideas I find on the Internet. I am a firm believer that if our children become really interested in history and the world around us, they will become more responsible citizens of the world. Furthermore, this approach to teaching social studies without repetitive reading and quizzes, allows students of all ability levels to participate to the best of their abilities.

By December, I will be introducing colonial life in America. The books I am requesting will teach our students what it truly was like back in the day. After we read and study the book, we will then create a play to teach the 4th grade classes about the American colonies. I have heard many wonderful things about these unique books and I hope to acquire a class set.

Your contribution will help me continue the momentum that has begun in our social studies class. Rather than hear, "I hate social studies, this year, I am so happy to hear, "I love social studies!"
