Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What does it mean to be a founding class of a middle school? How are these students continually challenged? These are my current students; hard working, college-motivated 11th graders who were the first 6th graders when our high school became 6-12th. We have had these young scholars for 6 years and they are in need of challenging materials in preparation for university.
These exceptional students are not only motivated and highly skilled, they have overcome many challenges as youth of color in Oakland.
Almost all of our students are low-income who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Almost all are from parents of immigrants or are immigrants themselves. Many have faced challenges learning English or have come into the school with low math/reading scores. They have lost friends and family members to violence, been torn apart through immigration, and struggle with confidence due to stereotypes.
However, they break these stereotypes each day. They have been pushed through learning exhibitions, career focused internships, and supportive programs. And through these experiences, the students have moved to be some of the most prepared for college level work. These students are in need of donors to give them access texts to challenge their learning.
My Project
To challenge our students, this project will give them access to college level reading materials through a history book circle. After studying major topics in American history, each student will choose a text of their choice, such as A People’s History of the United States, to allow for deeper research and understanding.
My hope is that students will be find a topic they are passionate about and delve into these texts with gusto.
The student initiated groups will be given higher level reading strategies to capture important elements within the texts and will lead their own discussions. They will then use elements from the text for their individual research paper.
