The majority of our students come from generational poverty backgrounds. They come to school looking for comfort, safety, and stability. Our staff does the best we can to give our students this support. They face so many struggles in their home lives that all too often interfere with their learning such as hunger, lack of sleep, or cleanliness. We provide them with many resources to help fill those basic needs that so many of them do not have at home. We provide every student with breakfast every morning. We have extra clean clothes for those who need them and know where we can get other things to fill those needs. As their teachers, we fill a role that is so much greater than just teaching them. We have to step in and teach them many life skills that they might not receive elsewhere. We are not just teachers. We are caretakers of the little lives that walk through our doors each year.
My Project
I would like to have some better more current tools to learn history and social studies. Our social studies books are at least 16 years old. We do not have adequate materials to help them learn with a hands on experience. Social studies and history can be a challenging topic without more interactive materials.
I want to have hands on materials for my classroom.
These boxes of centers and materials will be great tools for helping expand my students knowledge of history and social studies. They will be able to better grasp the past and know how the world around them works. I am hoping to use these materials to expand their knowledge in history and help them to enjoy it a little more.
