My students need two USB microphones, 2 ASUS laptops, LCD projector, and an external hard drive.
My 7th graders are full of potential. They bring to my history class a wealth of knowledge about the world that they have gained through their life experiences, cultural experiences, and television. We have daily discussions to relate history to their increasing knowledge of the world.
The student population of our middle school is diverse.
We are approximately 60 percent Hispanic and 30 percent African-American. Most of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students are extremely creative. I am always hearing surprising, humorous, and insightful answers to my discussion questions. However, I believe, as a whole, our students need to build academic vocabulary in order to more easily express themselves in writing and discussions.
My students need two USB microphones, 2 ASUS laptops, LCD projector, and an external hard drive. To help students improve their verbal abilities and become more familiar with a growing medium of the internet generation, students will create short audio podcasts in which they discuss the influence of different religions upon the Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Arabian Peninsula, West Africa, and Mesoamerica. In groups of three, students will create an outline of discussion topics to fill a 10 minute audio podcast. Each student will brainstorm ideas of what they might say for each topic. Then they will record their conversations. Students will be required to use both content and academic vocabulary as they compare and contrast the different religions and the impact those religions had on the regions where they spread.
Listening to podcasts is an excellent way for students to develop their linguistic skills, vocabulary, and in-depth knowledge about a wide range of subjects.
By giving them an experience in creating their own podcast, I can help them develop their ability to have structured, flowing, and insightful conversations. They may also get into the habit of listening to podcasts throughout the day, which would increase their awareness of current events and help them discover new interests.
