My students need art materials to study and appreciate the multicultural diversity of Africa. They will create original art work that will inspire them.
Nelson Mandela said, "It always seems impossible until it is done," and this quote is the philosophy that inspires my classroom to never settle for being ordinary. We create the impossible every day by doing it the "Becker Way."
I hope to inspire my 5th graders with a multicultural room that celebrates Africa, the huge fifty-four country continent with 900 million people.
They will learn to appreciate the culture through hands-on learning with an emphasis on art, music, and dance.
We seldom learn the "normal" way in this highly motivated and "right-brained" classroom. We are passionate about learning. Africa is a goldmine for its diversity, people, and geography and we can hardly wait for the adventure! Music and rhythm is part of the magic of this classroom.
Motto in our room is, "Work hard, play hard." We make history come alive!
My Project
It is difficult to teach about multicultural areas without materials. American and European units are part of the curriculum, yet it is so difficult to find resources on Africa. I want to inspire my students with this unit by creating the continent in my room. I want to create the deserts, jungles, savannas, and vast beauty of this part of the world. I want them to feel like they are in Africa! We will use the resources to create masks, instruments, costumes, and sets for a huge production on Africa. I have no doubt that their lives will be changed forever when they experience the many creative and memorable lessons I have planned for this coming year. Hand-on learning stays with a child forever. What better way to learn about history than to experience it, build it, create it, and live it.
It is time to celebrate this vast continent called Africa.
It is a goldmine for information and our past. Help me inspire my students with a multicultural experience that will make learning about history fun and exciting too.
