When someone asks where I teach, I proudly exclaim the name of my school and the response I always get is, "Oh, that is a wonderful school!" I have to agree and have called it home for the last fifteen years. I'm so lucky to be a part of this school community. It is an older campus-style school that is tucked away in a neighborhood, which makes it easy to miss; however, I and my local community consider it to be our hidden gem. What makes us so great? Our student population is very diverse. We have a variety of economic backgrounds, over 50 countries represented, and many students receive free and reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, we have students who receive weekly food bags and school supplies from caring teachers and community members.
Our students' willingness to learn, our sense of community, and school pride is what holds us together and keeps us going.
Students and teachers at my school always have a smile on their face and make it a wonderful place to be!
My Project
My students love to read and they can't get enough books! They especially enjoy purchasing books from our student run classroom store using the money they earned from our classroom mini economy. I would love to add books by Stephen K. Smith to our class store because they take place in our hometown of Virginia and they also align with our state curriculum. The characters in the story are the same age as my students and are very relatable. The connection to the characters will help my students dive deeper into the book and have a better understanding of the historical content.
These books are page turners and I know my students will be filled with suspense and engagement as they read to solve the mystery.
What a great way to inspire a continuous love of reading! Please help me teach students the importance of a dollar and build a community of lifelong readers!
