I teach at a Title I charter school. My students come from all backgrounds but the one thing they have in common is that their families want the best education for them. No one that is accepted to our school is denied. The students at our school have varied needs.
We have students that range from requiring special services full time, to students that excel so far that they compete academically at state and national levels; all of these students are taught in the same class.
Because of the dynamics in the classroom, our school is always looking for the best way to educate every student at their level.
I am excited about the prospect of moving beyond what we currently have and creating new opportunities to learn.
My Project
The students at my school focus on history. We believe that if we can understand the past, we can build on that past and create an amazing future. We will use drawing, painting, mixed media art, sculpting and building with STEM materials to better understand the history and stories of our past.
Using art and building materials to explore the past will help my students become the history makers of today.
One specific unit we study is ancient Egypt. I would like to learn about different artifacts the Egyptians would bury with their dead. One artifact we could create would be an amulet. We would use self hardening clay to make the centerpiece. Once the amulet dries, we would paint it with liquid water color and embellish it with acrylic diamonds. We would use elastic thread (Beadalon Elasticity) and perler beads to create a necklace to hang the amulet from. We could use different STEM materials such as connecting straws, flakes or blocks to experiment with different materials. The materials could be used to effectively build different types of pyramids. These two enriching activities would help my students understand the importance of technology and culture in ancient Egypt.
Once my students understand the care and precision that was taken to build the pyramids and dress the bodies of the dead, they could use that knowledge to create something durable and meaningful for our culture. When given different mediums to explore and learn, my students start to take ownership for their education. Learning becomes enjoyable and exciting.
