Help me give my students an opportunity to become socially active! We, as a community of learners, must be aware of the past in order to build a strong future.
My students are special because they are curious, excited, and dedicated learners. Since coming to work in a school in rural Alabama, my students constantly amaze me with their abilities! I often say to people, “These kids can do anything!” And truly, they can! This school year has been eye-opening, in that I am looking for a dynamic way to help students do their best work, expand their global perspective, learn tolerance and empathy, and be proud of their hard work. If I have learned anything in my years of being in education, I know in my heart that all students learn in unique ways-celebrating the individual uniqueness of each person is vital in today’s society. And it is the job of a team- students, teachers, parents and stakeholders to embrace that objective and help our students grow.
My Project
IHS Historical Society students wish to visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. The IHS Historical Society students are leaders in our school and in our community. They truly relish the opportunity to learn more about American and Alabama Civil Rights history, the dangers of racism, and lynching. The purpose of this type of history lesson is to ensure that society never again has these evils exist on the scale of what they once were.
To that end, it is imperative that students become actively engaged in social causes.
The IHS Historical Society will visit both the memorial area and museum at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and then they will collaborate with one another while sharing a meal. Once returning back to IHS, students will be assigned groups and within 3 weeks of the trip, each group will submit a project on Civil Rights that can be presented or used by upper elementary and/or middle school students (5-8).
