Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hungry for knowledge, but unfortunately they are not very excited about history. They need to see that history can be exciting and fun!
I teach the newcomer program at an urban middle school. My students know little to no English, but they are eager to learn. They soak up knowledge like sponges. Unfortunately, every time I say it's time for history, groans resound throughout the class.
They need to get excited about history. They need to see that there are interesting stories and colorful characters within the bowels of their not-so-exciting history text book. My students love reading so I think that historical fiction and non-fiction in our classroom library would go a long way in raising their interest in history, particularly American history. As new immigrants it's very important that they learn the history of their new country.
As a donor, you would be giving these children an opportunity to read and learn about U.S. and world history in a non-traditional way. They will be able to read interesting stories about the past and historical characters which include women and lesser known historical figures. Not only will you be sparking their curiosity, but you will also be helping them to improve their reading skills, a very important skill no matter who you are in our society.
