My students need social studies materials, including 2 map carpets and a globe, to start the year knowing how engaging social studies can be.
Cicero once said, "to be ignorant of the past is to forever be a child." By bringing the past alive in social studies class my students will learn to be more intelligent and mature.
My students are 90% students of color, 90% qualify for federally funded lunches, and 90% start at our school below grade level.
At this inner city charter school in Missouri the students work very hard to get themselves on an academic track to be ready for college. The students need access to the best materials possible to get on that college bound track.
With the variety of Social Studies materials I am requesting, my students will be able to see history come alive. Whether it is re-enacting a revolutionary war battle on a life size carpet map, or charting the course of westward expansion on an erasable desk map the students will have an opportunity to experience hands-on work. This will help students invest in studying history and increase the information they retain when encountering it in a tactile way.
This project is so important because social studies opens the door to learning about humanity.
This materials can create a curiosity in the minds of students which can be the catalyst for being a life-long learner.
