History Has Its Eyes On You: A Colonial Classroom Library
My students need a variety of fiction and nonfiction titles that feature what it was like during colonial times in America! Having many books on this topic will make history come alive!
I teach a great group of students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in a Title 1 school in North Las Vegas. It is important to me to expose them to high-quality literature, immerse them in figurative language and complex vocabulary, grow their critical-thinking skills, and instill in them a love of reading.
They take pride in their hard work and understand that when we challenge ourselves to take on new and complex tasks, that is when we learn the most!
My Project
As a Hamilton musical loving teacher, lyrics run through my head all day long with one in particular being, "There's a million things I haven't done! Just you wait!" Teachers often struggle with fitting everything in that needs to be taught and one of the subjects that can fall by the wayside is history. What better way to ensure it isn't left out? Integrating history and reading!
This project requests fiction and nonfiction books on the colonial time period of American history at a variety of levels.
My wish is to use some of the titles for whole group instruction, some of the titles for small group differentiated instruction, and provide the rest of the titles for students to self-select for their independent reading. By immersing my students in literature on this subject, I hope to make the colonial era come alive, foster interest in American history, and help my students become strong readers!
