Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are aspiring young historians who appreciate real world connections and addressing the racial/systemic issues that are facing our world today especially with the erasure of many important historical accounts. We will be focusing on viewing films as a part of primary and secondary sources such as Stand & Deliver, Freedom Writers, Harriet, Fruitvale Station, The Hate U Give, Real Women have curves, and Pelo Malo to name a few. We will be using the Apple TV system and the Apple iPad to view these films and present group presentations through film and audio projects. The rest of the supplies like markers, glue, and paper etc. will be used to create handouts, worksheets, student projects, hands on demonstrations, and creative assessments rather than the normal paper test.

My goal is to teach history in a way that is more relatable and inclusive to the standardized way it is normally taught.

We don't normally get to study people who are silenced or erased from textbooks and media. I will be using Howard Zinn's books and activities to flip the classroom and introduce them to a truthful, inclusive, and representative account of US and World History.

My students are very bright and eager to learn and with your help, I will be able to provide them with the environment and materials to do just that! The end goal is for them to become not only historians but advocates for themselves and their communities as a whole. They come from a very diverse background like I do and they deserve to be given the opportunity to learn.
