Art has always been the perfect place to bring together multiple subjects. I believe that it is important to show students that a particular subject does not belong only in that classroom. For instance, they will use math in the grocery store check out lane and lots of other places. With the unit I am hoping to teach, I am going to bring together History, Art, Math, and Industrial Technology. We will be using problem solving and critical thinking to work through making a classical Egyptian wire bracelet. This unit will introduce the students to the Egyptian spiral, the history of early jewelry making, jewelry making tools and safety. They will also study about the materials the Egyptians used to make jewelry. The students will then make their very own bracelets out of wire while learning about bending wire techniques. My jewelry classes have grown very rapidly over the past couple of years. We have gone from offering one class for only one semester to offering two classes for the full year. It has been great for our department but we have had some trouble stocking enough supplies to keep up with the demand. I currently have 45 students in two classes. I wrote this proposal in two parts hoping to get some supplies to get us started. The students may have to share tools for a while. Thank you so much!!!
