School is boring, that is what my students tell me. I teach high school students social studies at a school that is about 65% Hispanic with about 60% free and reduced lunch and a 30% dropout rate. Even gifted students are leaving our school because they don't see the point.

Our school is dedicated to giving all students as many opportunities as possible to make learning an engaging opportunity. Next year we will be offering a Saturday School through the Social Studies Department. I will be offering a course examining history through hip-hop music. In my freshman social studies class I introduced hip-hop lyrics as a way of analyzing a primary source document and the students loved it.

Through the Saturday School Academy, my aim is to build off student interests in hip-hop music and culture, and show them how history and hip-hop are intertwined. Through the use of "Hip-Hop U.S. History" and "Hip-Hop History of the World", students will develop a deeper understanding/comprehension of historical events. Through the use of “Hip-Hop Revolution: The Culture and politics of Rap", as well as selected hip-hop songs, my students will analyze the role of hip-hop in American culture as it pertains to the post-civil rights movement, freedom of speech, politics and culture. While using "Hip-Hop Poetry and the Classics", students will compare and contrast hip-hop songs and lyrics with those of classic poetry while also addressing numerous language arts standards. Finally, in “Hip-Hop and Philosophy", students will be introduced to philosophical writers by comparing hip-hop and philosophy.

Through your generous donations my students will be introduced to numerous college preparatory concepts using a media and mode that interests them. With these materials, students of all skill levels will gain insight to critical thinking, comparison analysis, history, culture, language, and philosophy. Education needs to be more investigational and risk-taking; we are losing too many bright minds following the traditional methods of education that are out-dated. You can be part of the revolution in education that needs to take place by helping fund this project.
