In our secure fifth grade classroom on the south side of Chicago, we do our best to make history come alive. We had Elizabeth I day which included costumes and "interviews" with the queen. We've had Ancient Greecian Game Day, togas included. With creativity and learning extended beyond the text book, my students are engaged in critical thinking and developing into responsible, innovative citizens. In an effort to continue our hands-on history experiences, "Day of Tears: A Novel in Dialogue" could serve as a central and paramount element of our unit on slavery in the United States. Author Julius Lester paints an intense portrait of the south in the time of slave auctions and uncertainty in the lives of Africans and African-Americans. The format of "Day of Tears" is unique. Rather than an informative text, Lester chooses to weave his story as a play. The reader is even more invested in the characters as each of their voices comes through in the dialogue. A play is an ideal way to bring new life to our survey of this time in American history. "Day of Tears" would not only attract my students with it's topic and unique format, but my extroverted fifth grade Social Studies classes would enthusiastically take on the parts and responsibilities of their own learning. This grant asks for 14 copies of Julius Lester's "Day of Tears: A Novel in Dialogue." With them, my students can bring their history to a new level. Instead of learning from paragraphs of non-fiction text, they can bring life to the voices of our history. Please assist me in bringing history to life with my curious, brilliant young historians.
