Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While reading and writing is the focus in most classrooms, social studies is often left far behind. My students have yet to realize that they live in a city, within a state, that's a part of a country, etc. We desperately need to weave social studies into the reading, writing, and math curriculum.
Remember the days when learning about history and your community was as exciting as reading out loud one by one in front of the entire class and then memorizing the information for your test on Friday? Well, times have changed for students and there is a new AMAZING social studies curriculum called "History Alive!" The name describes is perfectly.
Lessons and activities are based on three well-established theories of Multiple Intelligences (students learn in different ways: kinesthetically, musically, linguistically, visually, etc.), Cooperative Interaction (group work leads to learning gains and to higher student achievement), and the spiral curriculum (in which students learn progressively more difficult concepts through a process of step-by-step discovery.)
With this program my students will see themselves as important to not just their immediate community, but to the rest of the world! My students will participate in exploring the past, have mock elections, time travel to the past and to other countries, explore the commonalities and differences of their culture, and others!
This grant would fund the teacher's manual and backlines masters to make copies and worksheets necessary for the hands-on explorative lessons. It would also fund an organization file for the students' work.
