Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is tucked away in Echo Park, Los Angeles. The city providing a beautiful backdrop of diversity and exposure to a wide variety of attitudes, beliefs and celebrations of life. Our students come from all over Los Angeles to be a part of this Dance Charter school, who's mission is to serve lower-income community families and expose our students to a rigorous daily dance curriculum, that allows students to express themselves emotionally and physically through dance.
This group of students is particularly special because of their resilience, not only in school, but in life.
All my students are immersed in the general education classroom, pushing themselves to meet standards presented to them, despite having an array of disabilities that ranges from Autism, to Emotional Disturbance, & many having experienced severe trauma. These students push themselves, never giving up & always managing to uplift their peers & teachers with encouragement. They make the days meaningful.
My Project
Students will learn how to closely look at historical events and critically think about how they shape people and societies. Through access to these books, students will not only learn about historical events through fiction and non-fiction, but also will begin to practice their own historical fiction writing skills. They will use these books as inspiration, to show them ways in which we can create stories that come from the imagination, but are rooted in real life events.
One of the biggest core values that we teach at GCS is to understand what empathy is and how we can be more empathetic towards others.
These books are meant to begin sparking questions for students to ask themselves, "What would it have been like to be there during the Holocaust?" or "I wonder what people emotions people were experiencing during the Civil Rights Movement?" Students will use these books to probe their own ideas about major events that they feel have shaped our city, country, communities, and begin to write using these as inspiration.
