My humanities students need 30 copies of "Anthony Burns: The Defeat and Triumph of a Fugitive Slave."

I teach Language Arts and Social Studies in grades 7 & 8. My students are both general and special education, our school is located in a high poverty neighborhood. The school became a middle school four years ago and we have been struggling to get grade appropriate materials for our English Language Arts program. Until now, we have only received test prep materials or age appropriate novels that did not support the social studies curriculum. My goal is to get the students into historical fiction, giving them the chance to gain a deeper meaning of Social Studies.
Our obstacle at this point is the money needed to purchase the novels for a class set, allowing each student a copy. Our school's budget has been cut so severely, that many teachers have lost their jobs and we now have 40 student in a class.
We currently have 20 copies of the novel "Anthony Burns: The Defeat and Triumph of a Fugitive Slave." However, with 30 new books, the entire 8th grade class can have a copy to read independently. The students are learning about the impact of how power and morality affected wealth in the 1800's. This book will help us to answer a big question, how does power, wealth, and moralitiy influence others? This book will help us to better appreciate our visit to the Lincoln Exhibit at the New York Historical Society, a trip we will be taking later in the year.
With your help my students will gain a broader perspective on what people had to endure to ensure the personal freedoms that we enjoy today. Many junior high school students take their right to a free education for granted. My goal is to show them, through literature, what life was like during the Civil War period in American History.
