Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am attempting to teach the New York State Regents Global History and Geography course to 11th graders in the South Bronx. My school, the High School for Violin and Dance, is one of the new, small schools in NYC. Yet, despite a small student body, the class sizes are still too large, especially for students as disadvantaged as those from the South Bronx. Last year, my 11th graders were stuffed into two 37-student classes and according to my diagnostic tests and their own testimony, they know very little from the first half of the two-year Global History and Geography curriculum. The class sizes are down to 29 and 26 this year, but the biggest problem remains a lack of educational resources and student skills, which together provide for a lack of motivation. The school has had four social studies teachers come and go in the last three years.
Many of my students entered my classroom on the first day of this year disdainful before they had ever met me. Most of my energy goes towards explaining to students that, contrary to their own beliefs, they are not stupid and most definitely have the capacity to learn and excel in school. The problem with providing excellent teaching is that it requires some materials. First and foremost, I have no maps in my room. When I was in my suburban high school in Westchester County, NY, my global history and geography teachers had sets of historical maps showing how the regions of the world had changed politically over the last 5,000 years. These maps helped learning more than I realized at the time, but after studying pedagogy and cognition in college and observing learning in my own classroom, I am convinced that students' historical understanding is greatly aided with the use of large, visual representations of history and geography. Geography is fundamental to understanding history and moreover, it is heavily tested on the Regents exam. All of my students have been without maps for most of high school. Rand McNally has amazing historical maps that are cheaper than other pull-down map retailers. With these maps, I can teach history while directing my students' attention to the front of the classroom, providing for better instruction.
Thank you for your consideration.
