My students are brilliant, creative, diverse thinkers. Our school has a beautiful range of students from many socio-economic, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. They are new to sixth grade, and so they are just getting accustomed to thinking, reading and writing like real historians!
In sixth grade, students are young and curious, eager to devour knowledge about the world around them.
I want to hone in on, and develop, this curiosity through awesome graphic novels! I want to encourage a love of history, and a love of reading.
My Project
For our units on World War One and World War Two, my sixth graders will engage in literature circles about these powerful graphic novels. They will read the book each week, choose a role for their literature circle, and discuss the book within this literature circle each week in class. Finally, they will create their own graphic novels, telling the story they think is most important from this period in history.
These rich graphic novels will not only deepen and personalize students understanding of history, they will also serve as examples for students when they create their own graphic novels at the end!
These graphic novels are perfect for different levels of readers, as the combination of text and images inspire all students, from those who struggle to those who excel. They will act as an important thread in our studies of these two wars, bringing to life individual journeys and some of the big questions that we as a society continue to struggle with today.
