Historical Fiction to Bridge English and Social Studies
My students need 56 copies of Tiger, Tiger, a historical fiction novel, to improve literacy, get exposure to different genres, and implement their learning when studying Ancient Rome.
I am a new teacher with the district and the fourth teacher my students have had for Social Studies this year. I want to show my students the adventures that can be found in history and inspire my students to read more about our World's past.
I have a total of 56 students between two classrooms.
Each student is very different in reading levels, interests, and abilities. Many students enjoy reading books for pleasure and all students are working on improving their reading levels. My school is small k-8 school with only two classrooms per grade level and is dedicated to creating lifelong learners.
My Project
My students need Tiger, an historical fiction novel, to improve literacy, get exposure to different genres, and implement their learning when studying Ancient Rome. I envision our class to use the books for a unit of study on Ancient Rome. We will do independent reading, classroom discussions, and project based assessment throughout our unit of study with the books. This book will coincide with their studies on Ancient Rome, the Colosseum, and the culture and lifestyle of gladiators and Romans as seen through the eyes of two very different tigers. Independent reading, with guided questioning, and classroom discussion will help enrich the curriculum and introduce a style of writing not normally seen in Social Studies classrooms.
My students only have textbooks for their reading materials for this class.
By introducing a novel, based on their Social Studies curriculum, I will be able to add an element of reading adventure to their everyday class. It will also expose students to historical fiction and will assist with their literacy skills in future testing scenarios. Most importantly, I will be able to introduce an element of fun, exciting, and informative reading into their classroom.
