Our elementary school is located in a rural part of Wake County in North Carolina. The town has population of 4,591. Our school is a PreK-5th grade public school with a population of 545 students. We have two Title I blended PreK classes and two Special Education classes. Our current student demographics are 31.68% Caucasian, 30.1% African American, 32.15% Hispanic and 4.609% multi or Asian. 70.64% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.
We have some of the sweetest, charming students.
They work hard and come to school smiling despite the fact that many live below the poverty line and some are homeless. At ZES we have a program called Capturing Kid's Hearts. This program is teaching the staff how to capture and build relationships with all students. Every morning we great our students with handshake and welcome them to the classrooms. We also have scheduled time each day for students to share good things that are happening.
Teachers buy many of their own supplies because they know our families cannot afford to donate. Our intentional relationship building does not need to be overshadowed by the need for supplies. Help us help our teachers protect their supplies.
My Project
Giving low-income students access to new, current Historical Fiction picture books is an investment in their future. Presently, the average age of our picture book collection at ZES is 1997 and picture books encompass 1/3 of our entire collection. Fish for Jimmy: Inspired by One Family's Experience in a Japanese American Internment Camp might resonate with some of our immigrant students and their families.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student reading, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
My students will be thrilled to have these books! Students in all grades (K-5) will have access to these titles and will be reading current, up-to-date material.Children never tire of reading good books.
