Historical Fiction: Eye On The Past

My students need to learn about our country's history through the eyes of the people who lived it and from those that research and bring it back to life. My Students

After reading a great historical fiction book with my class for the last 3 weeks, they have asked if we could read more books that help them learn what it was really like for the people living through the history. My library is limited and I feel I need to do this to encourage great reading!

We are from a small rural community where the loss of jobs from the textile industry, furniture industry and building trades have taken a toll on many of our residents.

Loss of homes, cars and higher gas prices have continued to cause a decline in families being about to take their children to visit places of historical importance. Children need more exposure to our country's rich past.

My Project

Our students don't have a lot but they do have a close-knit community that wants the best for their children. Many of these children have never been more than 30-50 miles from home. They do not have the opportunity to experience history by traveling to the countless historical places in our country. In the past many family vacations focused on our countries heritage. Our present economy prevents many from doing this and as we all know a book can take you many places. My students need to learn about our country's history through the eyes of the people who lived it and from those that research and bring it back to life. This project is so important because I have several students that are reluctant readers.

They are right on the verge of embracing literature as a means to enrich their lives and contribute to their academic success. The deep discussions we are having and the empathy my students are learning is incredible. Finding out about our past through rich, interesting and vivid characters and stories has awaken a new fascination for literature in my students. Please help create a library for history
