Help me give my students access to books that are about characters that are like them; that is, part of the Hispanic culture. Aristotle and Dante by Benjamin Saenz even takes place in Texas.
Our students are a very diverse group; that is, they may be low socio-economic, gifted, learning disabled, autistic, dyslexic, and/or a second language learners. We work as a team of teachers that teach 500 eighth graders each day in English Language Arts classrooms. Traditional reading and writing instruction is a very important part of our classroom. The overall expectations set forth at the beginning of each year are clearly set forth by our state, our district, our campus, and in our classrooms. That being said, our students do not necessarily like to read and write. They come from backgrounds from which they are not exposed to literacy; that is, they do not have literature in their homes and do not have world wide experiences. It is our goal to make sure they have the tools necessary to be literate readers, fluent writers, and exceptional thinkers. It is our goal to reinforce the traditional learning of new ideas in new ways with a mix of the classics and a bit of modern melded together to create life-long, productive individuals.
My Project
We have a diverse population; however, a majority of our students are Hispanic. They never get to see stories by authors that are like them. Furthermore, our students, all of our students, need to see stories that relate to them. These books feature Mexican Americans and Cubans in a positive manner. We need this. Our school needs this. Our community as a whole needs this.
Please help us show our students that they are relevant and their history is important.
Too many times we forget to represent all of our students when we are looking at literature. We are excited to share these stories.
