I teach 10th grade English to students who are Karen refugees (from the country of Myanmar, formerly Burma.) This particular class is high-poverty and high-needs. All of them are English language learners, and many have secondary learning challenges such as reading and writing disabilities.

The majority of this particular class has spent the better part of their childhoods in Burmese refugee camps. From what they write of their deplorable experiences, it is astonishing to me that they are so fully present and eager to learn. Our community has welcomed many of their families; these teenagers are respectful, hardworking, and want very much to learn English and assimilate into our culture. The obstacle we face is that the literature available isn't relevant at all to their lives. I work hard to teach them the "canon" of English lit, but would like very much to have them read the story of Minik, the New York Eskimo. In so many ways, their stories are similar: the realities of being disconnected from their homes, their languages, and their families. Additionally, this book is written in plain (but not simplistic) language that could be a gateway to them reading more complex pieces of literature.

We need 35 copies (30 for students, one teacher copy, and four as classroom "loaners" in case someone neglects to bring theirs to class) of Give Me My Father's Body: the Life of Minik, the New York Eskimo. The subject matter of this true story will give my students access to a book with which they can connect in a relevant way. The language is less intimidating than some grade-level selections, but is still written for the high school and adult reader. I believe that this story will open my students to new discussions, writing avenues, and a feeling of empowerment at connecting to a story.

Your help will give my students some very real skills as they work hard toward achieving their own American dreams. These are teenagers who, in less than a generation, have become multilingual despite little formal schooling. Their success is due almost entirely to their own perseverance, and for that they have earned my lifelong respect.
