We are in dire need of something our students can sink their teeth into! I see eighty-seven smart, gifted, lively and motivated students on a daily basis. We are a high-need school with high-need students that deserve all the help they are receiving. I teach twelfth grade Brit Lit and twelfth grade AP Lit. As we move through our curriculum the students are often bound by some of the archaic material that is presented in their textbook. These students are full of knowledge but are often stunted by lack of funding both personally and through our school district and we must rely on ten-year-old textbooks that the students have difficulty relating to.

The students are presented with ten-year-old Brit Lit textbooks that are torn, rebound and so dense, that just by the look of them, the students are quick to dismiss them. The material that is presented is, of course, beneficial and important for the students to learn and understand, I just hope to provide a supplement that they can also utilize. This is a minority-majority school; 96% of the student population is African American. The book that I am requesting, "Hip-Hop Poetry and the Classics for the Classroom," provides material that the students are already familiar with and material that will be new for them to learn and understand.

We are in need of this supplemental poetry book: "Hip-Hop Poetry and the Classics for the Classroom." Viewing poetry through a more contemporary lens can push these students to see a more clear-cut connection between their lives and poetry. As it has been proven many times before, if my students can relate to material, they can enjoy the material.

You will make it possible for my students to enjoy something that upon first glance, is overwhelming and intimidating. Your help will open up a new door to the world of poetry that these students never knew existed.
