I am a music teacher in a high school located in downtown Brooklyn, New York. Our students range in age from 17-21. My principal recently approved a Hip Hop Studies course and, thanks to DonorsChoose, I was able to get a great set of Hip Hop studies readers.
This class will be a thorough study of Hip Hop music and culture. We will focus on the origins of Hip Hop and its evolution into a vibrant and ever expanding force in our National and World Culture. WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE “ZONING OUT LISTENING TO HIP HOP TUNES”. This course will be both CRITICAL and CELEBRATORY as we identify the current success, failure and challenges to Hip Hop music in our world (particularly the controversy of Hip Hop and its view on women and the role of women artists in Hip Hop music).
I need to assemble musical selections for my students to listen to, study, discuss and write about. To acquire songs that truly represent the birth, journey and current state of Hip Hop music I want to purchase Hip Hop/Rap and related music from the ITUNES music store.
We are going to listen to selections of: Alternative Rap, Bass Rap, East Coast Rap, G-Funk, Gangsta Rap, Golden Age Rap, General "Hip Hop", Jazz Rap, Latin Rap, Old School Rap, Party Rap, Political Rap, Pop Rap, Southern Rap, Turntablism, Underground Rap, West Coast Rap, Hip-House, Posse Tracks, Female Rappers, White Rappers, Rap-Metal, European Rap and, just as important, NON-Rap/Hip Hop artists (i.e. Muddy Waters via Electric Mud) who influenced Hip Hop as well as the current trends that are unfolding in Hip Hop.
The All Music Guide to Hip Hop defines the above categories as essential to a rigorous analytical study of Rap/Hip Hop music. The ITUNES Music Store has a convenient system for LEGALLY purchasing and downloading music. The class will work together to select songs that we feel are important for a music library based on our historical and cultural readings on the specific songs and underlying social causes of their creation – as well as how much we enjoy it musically!!
This music library would serve the school as well as future courses of Hip Hop Studies. Through this course I'm going to be able to address essential elements not only in music study, but also Social Studies, English, Business, Fine Art and Computer Technology.
