My middle school students are dynamic, intelligent, and, above all, musically talented. In many cases, students thrive in the arts, even if they struggle in other subjects. Our middle school offers many diverse arts electives every nine weeks. "Beats: The History of HipHop Music" is one of these courses.
"I will not lose for even in defeat, there's a valuable lesson learned so it evens up for me." -Jay Z
The main messages of "old school Hip Hop" are encouragement, energy, self-expression and self-worth. Students would love to create their own musical compositions using the very same messages in their own Hip Hop style.
My Project
This project will provide a library of books and information for students to reference in relation to the contributions and influences Hip Hop has made to society musically, culturally and socially. Imagine diving into the minds of some of the most successful rappers. How do they interpret language while manipulating rhythms?
Can you imagine a group of middle school students improvising a freestyle rap utilizing their language skills?
Combining rhythms, rhymes and reading with resources that students can use on a daily basis will meld language arts and music together. It becomes a grammy nominated symphony for all of the students involved!
